3.1 When Purpose Fades
The former chapter was an intellectual defense of this world view; a proof that the universe is divine, we are the universe, and therefore we are divine; in this chapter we will explore how to feed that divine self.
Perspective is what clarifies things in our life, what brings the distant goal into focus for the daily grind. It’s what gives us the clairvoyance to know that our current activity, be it labor or leisure, is exactly what we should be doing right now. Another word for perspective shining through out daily actions is how they reflect Purpose. A feeling of purpose in all that we do is living a good life. So how do we keep our purpose burning bright?
You have probably experienced moments of extreme purpose, when you were gushing with clarity. When I was 16, I repented of my sins and felt electrified. But the problem as with all sources of inspiration is that they gradually lose their potency if not quickly followed by habits. As soon as I started the week, those familiar triggers would attack and old reactions kick in.
Therefore, it would be incomplete to discuss Purpose without laying out clear guidelines on how to imprint its signature into our daily living. That is the aim of a spiritual creed.
“I live on Earth at the present, and I don’t know what I am. I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing – a noun. I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process – an integral function of the universe.”
How do we regiment this purest form of source-consciousness with earthly practices but not contaminate its purity with over-indoctrination? We discussed a formula in Chapter 1 for constructing this balance, but the spiritual transformation laid out is so personal that it would be impossible to write down, the moment it could be laid out into such specificity, it would collapse under its own weight. Such is the fragile nature of paradoxes. What follows is guidance for when our pursuit falls into peril, where to direct our focus that we may navigate the balance and avoid the pitfalls.
